EDITOR'S REVIEW
Anadolu Nargile at Çorlulu Ali Paşa Medresesi offers Istanbul’s traditional hookah culture in a lived-in historic courtyard rather than a themed set. Simple tea, coffee and flavored hookah service sits naturally within the 18th-century architecture, offering a pause away from showy lounges.
There is no scheduled music, live performance or DJ program. Courtyard conversations, tea spoons and bubbling hookahs create the soundtrack; traditional tea-and-hookah service continues through the day and the crowd sets the evening’s volume.
Stone-arched porticoes, a vine-covered courtyard, wooden stools, small tables, old wall inscriptions and colorful lanterns retain the historic madrasa character. Daylight makes the courtyard lively; lamps lend it a dimmer coffeehouse feel at night.
An open-air coffeehouse in a historic madrasa courtyard, focused on tea, Turkish coffee and traditional hookah. Long conversations, tending the coals and courtyard life shape the visit.
Local and foreign visitors taking a traditional hookah and tea break on the historic peninsula, small groups and anyone keen to experience the Çorlulu Ali Paşa Medresesi courtyard.
Comfortable but modest casual clothing suits the historic madrasa: covering shoulders and knees is considerate. Stable shoes are useful on the stone floor.
Anadolu Nargile, located in the Çorlulu Ali Pasha Madrasa, is a beloved, authentic spot known for its historic courtyard, hookah prepared with lemon-wood charcoal, hot tea, and Turkish coffee. Regulars return to the establishment year after year; the staff's friendliness and the lively atmosphere receive particular praise. Because the venue is somewhat tucked away, it can be difficult to find on a first visit. During peak hours, it gets crowded and noisy, with thick smoke making conversation difficult. The fact that the restroom requires a fee—payable only in cash—is also a point of criticism. Despite a few negative experiences regarding the hookah, the overall sentiment is very positive; morning hours are better for a quieter experience.
