EDITOR'S REVIEW
Historic Safa Meyhanesi has carried on the İstanbul meyhane tradition in Yedikule since 1948, inside a high-ceilinged late-nineteenth-century building. Glass-fronted cabinets, old rakı bottles, chandeliers and accumulated wall details are its living memory. The classic meze display, paçanga böreği and rakı table invite regulars and long conversations, away from modern show formats.
Turkish classical music and nostalgic selections accompany dinner without drowning out conversation. Rather than a regular DJ or stage show, the calm soundtrack supports meze, rakı and talk at the table.
High-ceilinged, dim, full of memories and dignified. Even at busy times, the room remains centered on conversation.
A longstanding neighborhood restaurant preserving old İstanbul meyhane culture through its historic room, traditional meze and regulars.
Lovers of historic İstanbul restaurants, classic meze-and-rakı culture, regulars, curious diners and calm adult groups.
Simple, clean, classic everyday clothes suit Safa. A jacket or dress is not required; natural meyhane elegance fits better than a showy club outfit.
Safa Meyhanesi stands out with its historic atmosphere and local vibe, preserving Istanbul’s traditional meyhane (tavern) culture. Many visitors appreciate the mezes (appetizers), fish, liver, and the genuine friendliness of the management; it is a preferred spot for those seeking a relaxed setting for conversation over rakı. However, some reviews note that the calamari and liver can be dry or ordinary, and prices are considered high relative to the quality. The lack of adequate separation between smoking and non-smoking areas can be a source of discomfort. In a few more serious instances, allegations have been made regarding foreign objects found in the food, a lack of apologies, and tourists being charged different prices. It is advisable to check the bill against the menu beforehand.
